A Day Through the Sierra Madre

The approach is part of the experience. Open water gives way to the small coastal settlement of Boca de Tomatlán, then a mountain road leads into the forest. Moving farther inland reveals a different side of the region, where trails, wooded slopes, and running water shape the day. Between the more demanding activities, there are moments to pause, look around, and enjoy the company of the group.

The Experience

See the Experience

The day begins at the departure point, where guests meet their guides and prepare for the journey ahead. After check-in, the group boards a speedboat and heads across Banderas Bay. Conversation rises over the engine as companions point toward the wooded coastline and the mountains beyond. At Boca de Tomatlán, everyone steps ashore and climbs aboard a Unimog truck. The road leads inland, trading sea views for trees and mountain slopes. At base camp, guests leave their belongings in lockers while the guides fit their equipment and explain the activities. A mule ride carries the group farther along the forest trail, with time to settle into the surroundings before reaching the circuit.

Outdoor Adventure brings together several perspectives on the landscape south of Puerto Vallarta. From the bay, the mountains form a backdrop. Once inland, the forest becomes the immediate setting, with changes in elevation and the course of the river determining how the journey unfolds.
The variety of movement gives the day its character. The mule ride offers time to observe the trail, while the elevated crossings reveal the wooded terrain from above. At the waterfall, attention turns to the rock face and the descent. These changes of pace make the experience particularly suited to travelers who enjoy physical participation and learning through guided activity.
For families and friends, it helps to consider everyone’s comfort with heights and sustained movement before reserving. Meeting the age and size requirements is one part of choosing the experience; willingness to take part in the full course matters as well. Anyone uncertain about a particular element should ask about participation arrangements before booking.
Plan the rest of the day with a little flexibility. After time in the water and on the trails, a quiet meal or an unhurried evening can be a welcome continuation. Keep any dinner reservation comfortably beyond the confirmed return time, allowing for the journey back to your accommodation.
The experience also works well as a more active day within a coastal itinerary. Pairing it with a separate day of sailing, beach time, or exploring the city gives each setting room to be appreciated.
